Prince George's history is rooted to Fort George's North West Company fur trading post. In 1903, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railways' route would pass near the fur post of Fort George. As a result of this, developments followed, and two rival land speculation businesses constructed South Fort George and Central Fort George communities in the area. In the year 1964, Prince George Pulp was built followed by two more other pulp businesses. New schools and more houses were included to keep up with the development, and ever since then, the population of the city continues to increase to over 70,000 people.
In the spring of the year 2006, the city opened the Prince George Field, that is a baseball facility which is recognized as amongst the most unique diamonds within BC. In addition, within the city is the Otway Nordic Centre, managed by among the biggest Nordic ski clubs in the province, the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club. It has around 40 kms of groomed trails which are lit for evening skiing, a biathlon range and a 1,400 sq. ft. day lodge. Recreation facilities which are normally found are multi-purpose arena, Aquatic Centre, roller rinks, CN Centre, ice rinks, tennis courts, eight golf courses, lacrosse fields, baseball, soccer, playgrounds and parks. Four provincial parks within the region offer heli-skiing, cross-country and downhill skiing.
